| Abstract: | Abstract
This paper examines a new form of data visualization that breaks away from the norms and creates unique and optimal solutions as opposed to standardized. The paper presents examples of these alternative data visualizations and uses these to illustrate points and bring perspective to the theories. Based on theories and empirical knowledge about data, the history and norms of data visualization, rhetoric and perception several new visualizations are designed. These are shown to a focus group, and the total empirical knowledge is discussed along with the terms of the theories. The paper concludes that the alternative data visualizations are wrongly judged based on norms concerning credibility, truth value and objectivity. It is the opinion of this paper that they to a higher extent should be understood as exceptional and angled visual stories. |
