| Abstract: | This study examines the correlation between identity and the use of Facebook. When creating a profile on Facebook, the user is met with a series of choices. Among these are the profile pictures, status updates and so forth. Depending on how the user chooses to interact with Facebook, a picture of his identity is painted. This picture is basically how the user’s Facebook friends perceive the user. This, and the fact, that the social actions of young teenagers have an impact on their identity, establishes the main problem of this research. The problem statement – How does 13-16 year olds portray themselves on Facebook compared to their identity? - is a result of these observations. Comparing three main theories with empirical data, the research concludes on both two hypothesizes constructed during the beginning of the project, as well as the problem statement.
